This paper discusses the different approaches to conversion in English, that is, the traditional approach with the zero-derivation theory in formal linguistics and the approach with the metonymy theory in cognitive linguistics. In general, both of the approaches have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, we need to take their advantages in explaining, teaching and researching this linguistic common but quite diverse and complex phenomenon.

In the previous article, an indepth study was conduducted into the grammatical characteristics of conversion of English words denoting human body part, based on a corpus of 50 English words for the human body which undergo conversion, together with their 129 meanings.In this paper, from the same corpus, the semantic aspect of the phenomenon will be thoroughly investigated to find out the how semantic change takes place thruogh process of conversion.

Conversion is a productive type of word formation in English.Of the groups of nouns most likely subject to conversion, names of human body part are seen as a fertile source of new words added to the stock of English vocabulary.Despite thí fact, not much research has been conducted on how this type of nouns undergoes conversion. Flexible use of word class is popular in Ancient Chinese especially in the use of contentive words. It aims to expand the vocabulary, differentiate the meanings and diversify the use of collocations. This paper presents types of conversion of nouns, adjectives, numerals into verbs. It also points out conditions and methods to recognize this phenomenon in Ancient Chinese.
