Eearlier theories of metaphor largely focus on metaphors in discourses rather than on discourses as metaphors or discourse metaphors. Discourse metaphors are defined as discourses that are wholly mapped onto source domains. Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of discourse metaphors: whole discourses interpreted as metaphors and metaphorical discourses embedded in larger discourses. The former include fables, allegories, and those involving fictive characters or plots. The latter typically appear in some political or argumentative discourses. This paper presents an exhaustive study of discourse metaphors in One Hundred Metaphors for Buddhism(《百喻经》) and Zhuang Zi(《庄子》). It is found that 1) discourse metaphors usually form many-to-one mappings, with one or more source domains mapping to the same target domain; 2) discourse metaphors normally have signaling devices, explicitly explaining the purpose of the source discourse or the question it addresses; and 3) there are different ways of mapping the source domain to the target domain: discourse juxtaposition, mixed mapping or summary mapping, which appear more frequently in political or expository texts.
